Outlines


I open the sunroof as we drive home.
From the buckled-in backseat
rapid fire at the back of my head they come:

        "Are there trees outside?"

        "Yes."

        "Are there houses outside?"

        "Yes."

        "Is the sky up in the sky?"

        "Well . . . the sky is the sky."

        *pause*  

        "That's because it's sky-shaped."

Your eager mind, catching at facts,
tenderly arranging, repeating our world,
offering bouquets for my approval,
I like the way it works.
That's because it's child-shaped.
