The plaintive chirp
interrupts my breakfast
a near but elusive sound
coming from
outside the room, from the
southeast
from the direction of the
back door.
Then while I peer through the
screen
scanning the yard, the pink
camellia,
again an insistent peep now behind
me
in the hallway, perched high
above:
the cry of a peckish smoke
detector.
